The main character and hero. The hell Shuu went through in heliwood would have been more than enough to mentally and emotionally break anyone else, but not Shuu. His philosophy in life is 'no matter how bad things get, as long as you're alive, something great is bound to happen eventually'.

Lala-ru seems to be the physical embodiment of water. She has no family and has been here for a long time. Her pendant controls her power, and using her power depletes her life. All she has known of mankind is fighting and selfishness, but Shuu, Sis, and the people of Zali Barth teach her of kindness. In the end she uses the full force of her power to return water to the earth, and in doing so using all her life and fades into the sunset.

At a young age, nabuca was ripped from his vilage and forced to become a Heliwood soldier. Although he comes off as cold and uncaring, Nabuca does everything he is told because he was promised that if he was a good soldier, he'd be able to return home. Meeting Shuu, Nabuca begins to give way to the painful emotions that he put away. He watches over Boo, and watches his childhood friend, tabur's nature change to sadism. in the end, nabuca is fatally wounded, by Tabur, and dies trying to help Shuu escape, with his dying breath demanding Shuu to go home to the place he belongs.

Boo stays with Nabuca, who plays a big brother role to him. although Boo carries a gun, he never shoots anyone because he is too shaky. after meeting Shuu, boo can no longer pretend that what they are doing is not insane and is ashamed of himself. In the final episode, Suun is about to shoot Nabuca, Boo runs to warn Nabuca, is struck by the bullet, and killed instantly.

Although Tabur came into the military a scared boy, overtime he becomes sadistic and power hungry. He resents Nabuca for being a better soldier and unlike Nabuca, he has no desire to return home. Tabur believes Heliwood will become the world power and wants to be a part of that power. In the last episode, Tabur reveals to Nabuca that after each village is raided, it is blown up-- there is no home for Nabuca to return to. When Nabuca refuses to ally with Tabur, Tabur shoots him. In the same episode, he is killed, drowned in the water Lala-ru summons.

Sara was taken by abelia from America, confused for Lala-ru. Once the mistake is realized, sara is forced to have sex with Heliwood soldiers so she will become pregnant and create a new soldier. After being raped repeatedly she attacks and kills a solider and runs away from heliwood. She eventually makes it to Zali Barth where she stays with sis. It is there, she learns she is pregnant, and though she tries to kill baby, Shuu stops her and convinces her life is worth living. In the end, she becomes the guardian of the children of Heliwood and stays, instead of returning to her time, to raise her baby.

Sis is the adoptive mother to the orphans in Zali Barth. She is against war and killing and thinks people should talk through their problems. She even protects Lala-ru, calling her daughter. Sis later die from the shotgn wound inflicted by.

Suun's mother was taken by heliwood soldiers. Her father was one of the assassins out to kill Hamdo, but he was killed by Nabuca in front of Shuu, who had tried to save the man. Suun, in Zali Barth, waits everyday for the return of her father while under the care of Sis. In the end, she goes to protect the other children hidden in Sis' house from the Heliwood soldiers and sees nabuca aiming a gun at them. she fires but boo takes the bullet and is killed, nabuca turns and reflexively shoots Suun. She dies.

The insane ruler of heliwood, wth a wikced bowl-cut hairdo. He somehwat resembles Hitler. He believes everyone is out to kill him, so he wants to kill everyone else first. He is desperate for lala-ru to give him water so that the heliwood can take to the air again. He is selfish and worries only for himself, uncaring of the lives of the soldiers or Abelia, and does not value life. He is smashed and killed as two waves collide in the last episode.

Abelia is in love with Hamdo and is jealous of the attention he gives Lala-ru. She follows all his orders, no matter how fool-hearty, even putting her life on the line. after the fall of Heliwood, she sends Shuu back to his time using the bound system. Sshe is given a second chance to start a new life by Sara.

His mother and father were burned to death when Heliwood soldiers raided their village. his sister was taken by the soldier but dumped in the desert to die when they learned she was ill. He finds his sister'S body, half-eaten by animals. as a result elanbu craves Hamdo's blood and the downfall of Heliwood and would do anything to see hamdo dead. in the end he takes lala-ru as ransom, but is shot to death by Abelia.

A heliwood soldier. He is in love with sara and request her 'companionship' while she was in Heliwood; he is the only soldier who asks for her name, and since he does care for her, whether he ever forced himself on her or not is up to question. He is also the spy that is sent to give the location of Zali Barth. He dies in the final episode; he saves one of Sara's newly adopted children, but just as he hands the child to Sara, he is washed away.
